Successful Behaviors Can Be Acquired

If you’d like to improve the impression people have of you in your work environment but are unsure what to change or how to go about it, observe the actions of people you admire or whose success you seek to emulate. Then, begin to mimic their behaviors, but without being a clone – few people appreciate a self-appointed “mini-me”.

For example, if you’ve received multiple complaints about aspects of your personality, such as that you laugh at inappropriate times or comment on inappropriate subjects, spend several weeks observing your model(s). Identify to what your model(s) laughs or the subjects upon which your model(s) comments. During that time, play it safe by containing your laughter or not commenting on subjects unrelated to work. Once you’ve identified a pattern, test it on you. For several subsequent weeks to months, laugh only at those things you think your model(s) would laugh or comment only on those things which you think your model(s) would comment.

Once a person has formed an impression of you, it can take a while to change that impression. As such, success will require patience: do not expect to see an immediate change in people’s responses towards you. However, if you continue to receive the same complaints more than a month later, request feedback from someone you trust – or even your model(s) – and start anew.
